For eighty years, the old chapel of Willow’s Rest has stood silent. Its doors have long since swollen shut. Ivy covers its weathered stones, and generations ago, after the last priest was laid beneath the chapel yard, the villagers removed the bell’s rope and clapper. Yet three nights ago, the bell began to ring.
That same night, every dog in Willow’s Rest began howling toward the eastern hills. Candles guttered without wind. Children whispered of armored footsteps in the cemetery behind the chapel, graves that had lain undisturbed for generations were found open by morning.
The next night, the bell rang again. Candlelight was seen moving through the corrupted fields beyond the village. Figures marched through the fog in rusted armor, carrying banners belonging to a kingdom that vanished centuries ago.
And at their head rode a knight upon a dead horse. Doomsayers call him Sir Aldren Veyne and he claims that Willow’s Rest and every acre surrounding it belong to him by royal decree; land granted to him by a king whose bones have been dust for hundreds of years…
